چکیده

This study, following up on work on Dutch by Warner, Jongman, Sereno, and Kemps (2004), investigates the influence of orthographic distinctions and underlying morphological distinctions on the small sub-phonemic durational differences that have been called incomplete neutralization. One part of the previous work indicated that an orthographic geminate/singleton distinction could cause speakers to produce an incomplete neutralization effect. However, one interpretation of the materials in that experiment is that they contain an underlying difference in the phoneme string at the level of concatenation of morphemes, rather than just an orthographic difference. Thus, the previous effect might simply be another example of incomplete neutralization of a phonemic distinction. The current experiment, also on Dutch, uses word pairs which have the same underlying morphological contrast, but do not differ in orthography. These new materials show no incomplete neutralization, and thus support the hypothesis that orthography, but not underlying morphological differences, can cause incomplete neutralization effects.

Incomplete neutralization and other sub-phonemic durational differences in production and perception: evidence from Dutch

Words which are expected to contain the same surface string of segments may, under identical prosodic circumstances, sometimes be realized with slight differences in duration. Some researchers have attributed such effects to differences in the words’ underlying forms (incomplete neutralization), while others have suggested orthographic influence and extremely careful speech as the cause. In thi...

The Robustness of Incomplete Neutralization in German

“Incomplete neutralization” (IN) refers to the finding that subphonemic differences distinguish segments in a neutralizing context. Previous findings on IN have often been called into question because of methodological problems. We conducted a production and a perception study to address these previous concerns and to investigate the robustness of IN in German final stop devoicing. Underlying v...

Incomplete neutralization via paradigm uniformity and weighted constraints

Incomplete neutralization occurs when two underlying segments become phonologically neutralized, but do not surface as phonetically identical. This phenomenon presents a challenge for traditional modular feed-forward grammatical architectures (Chomsky & Halle 1968, Bermúdez-Otero 2007) in which only the phonological output—not the phonological input—can influence phonetic realization. If two so...

Incomplete Neutralization in American English Flapping: A Production Study

This paper presents a production study of incomplete neutralization in American English flapping. In flapping, /d/ and /t/ both become a voiced flap in certain prosodic contexts (see, e.g., Kahn 1980). A number of studies show that this neutralization is incomplete: /d/-flaps can be distinguished from /t/-flaps on the surface (Fox and Terbeek 1977). Other studies, however, have found conflictin...

Effects of prime word frequency and cumulative root frequency in masked morphological priming

Four visual lexical decision experiments using the masked priming paradigm tested for effects of prime word frequency and cumulative root frequency with primes varying in degree of morphological and orthographic overlap with free root targets in French. Experiments 1 and 3 showed that only high frequency morphologically related primes produce signiŽcantly faster response times compared to ortho...
